crit 3

julie: lay them out 5x4, categorize into generic categories. model, art school, bathroom reflection, halloween, boyfriend, graduation, etc. different sizes will make categories. take picture of painting, tag people, invite them to show. may show in LAB, have computer in CSB. Paintings are naturalistic, experience with light when taken from computer, think about digital image looks like, romanticizing with imagination. System developing of social networking. Idea of light, not situation but digital light enforced upon by the computer.

kerry: mery and couplets. instalation, glass window in a door, painting on the outside of the door. mery inside the door, walls of the house. performance of the mery. normal door, big window. cutting the glass, same as silk screening. specimen divided into important parts.

joanna: interested in representation of female body and advertising. these images of women are accompanied by sexuality. integrate photo and design, posters of women and sexual image exaggerated. try billboard size. deal with vanity. compositing images together, may also perform as herself. digitally tweak image, though not make it creepy enough, relates to idea of barbie. sex cells, woman's body object of desire.

pryam: preliminary prints, no woodcut. more about the process of the print. house she grew up in. streching them than on canvas. the way they're cut more visually appraising to make it look like painting. multiple of one thing, yet mutated. stretched may not be a good idea. process is the most important thing, connected to the subject matter. process isn't rendering but its a work in progress. thicken amount of oil, plate that is not so absorbent (using wood). staining element may help to push out more the colors. strong metaphor of memory, substance of life. need to be visually striking.

jeff: recreating dream. upsetting, get all 5 senses. abstract photos put together. go back to basics, feel vibrations of sound. abstract vs experience? create abstract images through the video. projecting on the wall, layered the projection, still connected to the narrative, abstraction will come connecting as pieces. sensory pieces, great idea.

crit 2

Heather: assumption of stories. gossip about the piece. leaving pieces behind, interactivity with the viewer. it is an interesting concept because art cannot be defined, and by interacting with it, the viewer can get a notion or understanding of what the artist is trying to show.

Luis: evolution over time, artist portray society they live in, visual language of society, relive our time into magazines as historical reference, has society changed in regard to social issues?

Dave: photography through paint, collage of photographs together, representation of parts, personal, paint images from newspapers, non-existent time traveler imagery.

Andrew: will burton charts, design graphs, conversation explicit and implicit on text, tangents, body language, potentials for tangents, blogs.

Neil: identity, sketchs on the wall, drawing without construction, photos from engine parts, form better bits and pieces, pushing the space, composition of mechanical parts.

Naqeeb: different environments, world perception, gender sexuality, internet keywords as connotations, platform changes according to video.

Group 1c review

Jeff: His video was something to think about. The sounds that were coming from his "dream" made it annoying but that was part of the exhibition, to create a dislike from it. On the other hand, his expression of photographs and not changing them in photoshop create an abstraction that is hard to relate to what he wants to produce through his dreams.

Julie: Her depiction of imagery coming from facebook is quite original, painting her acquaintances in ways that are natural expression of the self, yet others as posed from a photoshoot. The best part about her idea is the scale. The large image catches the eye of everyone who sees it, yet the small prints are in the need to be closed up and be looked up in detail. Both combined attract the desire to understand her point of view, grandeur vs. minimalism.

Alex Bag's video

I have got to say that it was a little disturbing. The idea of doing a documentary about her life in school is very original. As time goes along, it is visible how she has evolved in the art world. But at the same time, her evolution has turned to something psychotic. Something interesting is how she plays different roles, much like Cindy Sherman. She makes an interesting point in how everything is about her but not about her. The feeling of smothered can arise from anything, and as one closes more and more to the end of their school year, things begin to build up. But in the sense that she was talking, it becomes something not to be spoken of about sexuality in ways that other people should not be interested in knowing.
